What is Vivitrol?
Vivitrol is one of the newest medications available to treat heroin/opiate addiction. It blocks opioids from acting on the receptors in the brain and can help ease drug cravings. By blocking the effects of opioids, it takes away the pleasurable effect, which can help with preventing relapse. Vivitrol is a non- addictive, once-a-month treatment that is used in combination with counselling to prevent relapse to opioid dependencies. Vivitrol is also used to reduce craving in individuals that abuse alcohol and is proven to help reduce heavy-drinking days & increase success maintaining abstinence.
Meet Vivitrol, an Antagonist Treatment Option
VIVITROL is indicated for:
- Treatment of alcohol dependence in patients who are able to abstain from alcohol in an outpatient setting prior to initiation of treatment with VIVITROL. Patients should not be actively drinking at the time of initial VIVITROL administration.
- Prevention of relapse to opioid dependence, following opioid detoxification.
- VIVITROL should be part of a comprehensive management program that includes psychosocial support.
